Indian security forces have killed five Maoist rebels in jungle clashes, an officer said on Sunday, as security forces seek to quash the decades-long insurgency in the resource-rich central regions.

Gun battles took place in the Abujhmad forests of Chhattisgarh state, taking the toll of the conflict in 2024 to around 200, one of the highest in years.

At least six police officials were killed and another was critically injured on May 20 when Maoist rebels targeted their vehicle with a bomb in eastern India, police said.

At least eight suspected Maoist rebels were killed in a gunfight with police who ambushed their hideout in southern India on Dec. 14.

The death toll from a mine collapse in eastern India's Jharkhand state rose to 16 yesterday as rescue workers continued to search for the bodies of seven missing miners.

A massive mound of earth caved in late Thursday at Lalmatia open cast mine, around 390 kilometers from the state capital Ranchi.
