A company's consolidation of some 19 hot air balloon companies has come under scrutiny for breaking down free and fair competition for the popular rides over the Cappadocia region's spectacular rock formations.

The ancient city of Kilistra, located on the historic King Road in the central Anatolian province of Konya, is drawing attention for its conical rock formations which resemble "fairy chimneys" found in Cappadocia.

Turkish parliament ratified a bill on May 23 that aims to protect Cappadocia, a touristic hub in central Turkey.
