Hungary Pulls Tainted Egg Products From Shelves

Hungary on Tuesday (Aug 15) became the latest European country to withdraw egg products imported from Germany containing the insecticide fipronil, Channel News Asia, reported. 

The EU member state's food safety agency Nebih said it had ordered the withdrawal of Asian-style frozen foods imported from Germany by a Hungarian catering trade supplier.

EU calls eggs talks as scandal spreads to Asia

The EU on Aug. 11 called an emergency meeting to stop "blaming and shaming" over the insecticide-tainted eggs scandal as it emerged for the first time that the crisis had spread to Asia.

Hong Kong, Switzerland and 15 European Union countries have all received eggs contaminated with the chemical fipronil, which can harm human health, the European Commission said.

Dutch police on Thursday arrested two company directors suspected of playing a significant role in a sprawling international scandal involving fipronil contamination in eggs, reported Politico.

Belgium and the Netherlands have for the past two weeks struggled to account for their failure to stop fipronil — a toxic insecticide banned for use on farm animals — entering barn eggs.
