Conflict and disaster forced more than 33 million people to flee within their own countries last year, putting them at greater risk amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, monitors said on April 28.    

Many of the richest countries are the "least generous" in supporting refugees or displaced people, a U.N. official and humanitarian aid expert has said, adding that Europe and the U.S. are making "embarrassingly" small efforts in this regard. 

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has warned against the closing of European national borders and called on European leaders to agree instead on a credible collective response to the current migration crisis.

Norway has agreed to take in 8,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2017, under an agreement reached June 10 by most of the Scandinavian country's political parties.
