Bishops do not take a religious oath
A quarter of a century ago, in June 1998, the sixth section of the Council of State was examining a seemingly paradoxical case: The Theological School of the University of Athens was refusing to award a degree to one of its graduates because he refused to take the established religious oath.

For a ‘sacred’ jersey, for a penalty…
From a purely mechanistic and rather arbitrary point of view, the voting public is the sum total of "the people" who have close or loose ties to political parties of all stripes, plus the unaffiliated, the indifferent, and those who reject politics. Of course, every party and every party leader believes that under their banner they have amassed the genuine and virtuous people.

A truly disturbing day
As a US naval officer, I took an oath to serve all Americans and support and defend the US Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. An oath to the rule of law and country, not to an individual or political party. That oath doesn't expire.

Sakellaropoulou swearing-in to be held next month
Greece's president-elect, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, is to be sworn in with a religious oath next month when she officially takes over her new role from incumbent Prokopis Pavlopoulos, the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA) quoted an aide to Sakellaropoulou as saying on Wednesday.

Greece elects first woman president
Greece's parliament on Jan. 22 elected the first woman president in the country's history, a senior judge with an expertise in environmental and constitutional law.
A cross-party majority of 261 MPs voted in favour of 63-year-old Ekaterini Sakellaropoulou, parliament chief Costas Tassoulas said.

President Iohannis took the oath of service for his second tenure
President Klaus Iohannis on Saturday took the oath of service for his second term in office, in front of the plenary sitting of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
New government members sworn in
The new members of the government were sworn in on Wednesday afternoon, in a ceremony held in the presence of President Prokopios Pavlopoulos and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
Twelve of the new ministers took a civil oath of office, while seven participated in a short religious swearing-in ceremony led by an Orthodox cleric.
