In a new step aimed at relieving traffic conjestion in Istanbul, the toll booths on the link roads leading to the TEM highway will be removed and replaced by an open-road tolling system to provide safer and faster passage, the transport minister has announced.

Construction truck drivers staged a protest on the recently opened third bridge over Istanbul's Bosphorus Strait on Sept. 5, arguing that they were asked to pay different fares at different times and demanding a discount on the bridge's passage fares. 

Turkey earned 486 million Turkish liras ($224.5 million) from the two bridges over the Bosphorus in Istanbul and toll roads in the first seven months of 2014, according to data released by the General Directorate of Highways (KGM) on Aug. 19.
