Türkiye spends $125 million on sunglasses imported from Italy

The number of sunglasses imported from Italy in 2023 increased by 44.8 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 3 million units, while the amount paid was $125.4 million, Anadolu Agency has reported, citing trade data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK).

In 2022, Türkiye imported 2.1 million sunglasses from Italy, paying around $70 million.

Doctors take issue with optical shops over eye tests

The Medical Association of Athens (ISA) has filed a complaint against optical shops for conducting examinations that must only be performed by qualified ophthalmologists. It said messages have come to its attention on social media in which opticians-optometrists invite citizens to have their eyes examined for various conditions. 

Woman invents ‘assistant glasses’ for visually impaired

A 25-year-old Turkish woman has invented special glasses, named "assistant glasses," that help visually impaired people to "recognize" people or "identify" objects.

Graduated from the U.S. Brown College, Melis Gökalp, who is working in an international digital health systems company, had written the software of the assistant glasses between 2019 and 2021.
