Wolfgang Schaeuble was an emblem in German politics, one of the pioneers of European integration, a catalyst in the unification of the two Germanies - he probably made it happen on the economic front - and, of course, one of Europe's longest-serving MPs, having served in the Bundestag for more than 50 years.

Germany on Friday rejected a fresh demand from Greece for hundreds of billions of euros in World War I and II reparations, insisting that a treaty signed 29 years ago had wrapped up all such claims.

Former German Chancellor and statesman Helmut Kohl, the longest-serving postwar Western leader, died at the age of 87 on June 16.
