No Amnesties for War Criminals amid Pandemic, UN Rapporteur Urges

The UN's special rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence, Fabian Salvioli, said on Wednesday that measures to protect against COVID-19 in overcrowded jails should not lead to amnesties or pardons being granted to people convicted of serious violations of human rights, crimes against humanity, genocide or war crimes.

Eurostat: 41.6% of the Bulgarians are Living in Overcrowded Households

In the European Union (EU), 17.1% of the population were living in overcrowded households in 2018, meaning they did not have enough rooms compared to the size of the household. Although merrier, overcrowded households can feel even smaller with kids playing in the same room as parents trying to telework during the coronavirus lockdown.

Back Migrant Integration: Highest Overcrowding Rate in Bulgaria

In the European Union (EU), 35% of non-EU citizens were living in overcrowded households in 2018, meaning they did not have the number of rooms appropriate to the size of the household. By contrast, this rate was 17% for nationals and 20% for foreign EU citizens (i.e. EU citizens residing in another EU country), Eurostat reported.

The percentage of overcrowding of housing in Bulgaria in urban and rural areas is very high compared to the average for the EU-28 countries. In terms of urban areas and by overcrowding of housing, Bulgaria is second only to Romania among EU countries, according to data from Eurostat's analysis of the housing conditions of European citizens in 2017.
