UN's Guterres issues 'global SOS' over fast-rising Pacific ocean

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sent out a global climate "SOS" at a Pacific islands summit on Tuesday, unveiling research that shows the region's seas rising much more swiftly than global averages.

"I am in Tonga to issue a global SOS — Save Our Seas — on rising sea levels. A worldwide catastrophe is putting this Pacific paradise in peril" he said.

Microplastics found in 75% of Slovenian rivers

Ljubljana – To highlight the problem of plastic pollution, over 1400 students in 100 Slovenian schools joined forces with scientists within the EU’s Plastic Pirates project. Over the course of one year, young people helped scientists to sample microplastics in rivers, which contaminated more than three-quarters of the rivers analysed.

EU Set to Handle Global Plastic Pollution

The European Union on Thursday (2 September) backed calls for a legally binding international agreement to reduce plastic pollution, during a UN-hosted conference in Geneva.

A German official said some 75 nations were already supporting a draft resolution circulated at the meeting, but warned that it could be years before an agreement is put in place.

An ocean cleaning system has begun collecting plastic rubbish from the Pacific Ocean after one year of testing, DPA reported.

"Today we announce that our cleaning system in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch has been catching plastic for the first time," the inventor of the system - Boyan Slat said at a press conference in Rotterdam.
