Spanish police have detained a man who carried out attacks with cold weapons in several churches in Algeciras in the south of the country, "El Pais" reported.

At the moment it is known that one person was killed and several were injured ("El Mundo" reports of four).

According o the poll published by the daily El Pais, 24 percent of Catalans favor independence after the early election, while 71 percent prefer an agreement with Madrid.

AP is reporting that El Pais used Metroscopia pollster which questioned 1,800 people by telephone November 20-22.

Russia's ambassador to Spain has denied the allegations made on the pages of the Spanish edition of El Pais that Moscow is involved in the organization of the referendum in Catalonia, Moskovski Komsomolets writes.

At least one person is confirmed to have died after a van mowed down pedestrians in Barcelona city center and 32 people were injured, 10 of them seriously, Catalan police and the regional interior ministry said.
   
Other media including El Pais said there were at least 10 dead.

A police spokeswoman could not immediately confirm the number of casualties. 

Five paintings by British artist Francis Bacon worth an estimated 30 million euros have been stolen from the Madrid home of their owner, El Pais reported March 13.

Spanish media group Prisa, publisher of the country's most widely-read newspaper El Pais, evacuated its Madrid headquarters on Jan. 7 after receiving a suspect package, a company spokesman said.
