Chania: Boat with 22 immigrants spotted off Gavdos – Rescued by two cargo ships

A boat carrying 22 migrants was spotted 37 nautical miles south of Gavdos.

Specifically, according to reports, the port authorities of Paleochora, Agia Galini, and Sfakia were informed about a small wooden boat in the area, and assistance for rescue was requested.

Thirty-seven migrants rescued off Gavdos

Greece's Coast Guard said on Thursday it had rescued 37 migrants from a vessel off the southern coast of Crete. 

The migrants were found on Wednesday night 18 nautical miles southeast of the small island of Gavdos. They were all collected by a container ship sailing nearby before they were transported by the Coast Guard to the port of Paleochora, near Chania.

Migrant arrivals on Gavdos, Crete continue unabated

Shortly before Monday's visit by Migration and Asylum Minister Dimitris Kairidis to Gavdos, south of Crete, 74 people were found on a boat that was at risk 10 nautical miles southeast of the island and rescued by the coast guard. They were transferred to the port town of Palaiochora, Hania on Crete (photo).
