A recent MRB poll shows main opposition SYRIZA dropping to fifth place ahead of the upcoming leadership election at PASOK, which is firmly in second place. 

This is the second survey showing SYRIZA in fifth place, following a poll released on Monday.

New Democracy maintains a large lead over PASOK, which is consolidating in second place, according to a major MRB poll aired on OPEN’s main newscast. Nikos Androulakis has a lead over PASOK a few days before the first round of elections, with Charis Doukas following close behind.

The voting intention

The intra-party race in PASOK has entered the final stretch with the movement’s presidential candidates making their keynote speeches as the first election Sunday of October 6 approaches.

Anna Diamantopoulou is currently presenting her plan for the necessary changes in the country and the “next day” of PASOK, speaking at her main pre-election event in Athens.

It has been 50 years since the founding declaration of New Democracy on October 4, 1974. The declaration was signed solely by Konstantinos Karamanlis, just two and a half months after his return to Greece, following 11 years of self-imposed “exile” in Paris. Thus, the party was established, which, along with PASOK, became the two main pillars of the post-dictatorial Greek Republic.

This Sunday is decision day for the leadership race in PASOK, a race that could determine not only the future of PASOK but the way forward for the broader center-left.

With six candidates vying to take over the party, the drama in PASOK is likely to continue beyond Sunday's election as a runoff is expected between the two leading candidates.

On Sunday at 7 a.m. the polls open for the internal election in PASOK and the candidates culminate their election campaigns. Right now, Haris Dukas and Pavlos Geroulanos are holding their main events in Athens.

The President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, is scheduled to visit the Stoa of Attalos at 18:45, where she will be presented with the “Democracy Award of the City of Athens” by Athens Mayor Haris Doukas, as part of the Athens Democracy Forum. The award recognizes her significant contributions to the promotion of democratic values.

They are not on stage at the moment. But they are still watching closely and sometimes intervening. How do they see the unformed landscape now that both parties are looking for new leadership and a new compass?
