Pay-as-you-earn tax

All taxpayers will have to submit their income tax declarations by June 30, according to a law amendment tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, while monthly road tax payments are making a comeback.

The online platform for the submission of this year's income tax declarations (for incomes earned in 2016) opened on Thursday, earlier than ever before, and it appears that it will close on July 15, although a legal clause to that end is still anticipated.

The measures and countermeasures the government is preparing with the approval of the country's creditors will lead to further tax hikes as of 2019.

Tax declarations will be filed electronically only for income accumulated after January 1, 2017, decided Parliament on Wednesday.

The BGN 1,000 discount for declarations filed before March 31, 2017 is still valid.

Tax payers will now be able to correct the declaration once only.

The self-employed and all pensioners will soon have their income tax deducted automatically from their earnings, something which is already the case for salary workers and many pensioners, as the Finance Ministry and the technical experts of the country’s creditors are working on the introduction of a “pay-as-you-earn” system from January 1, 2015.

The Finance Ministry on Friday appealed to millions of taxpayers to refrain from printing their notifications for the new unified property tax (ENFIA) during peak hours as the online Taxisnet service is experiencing a system overload.

The Panhellenic Federation of Property Owners (POMIDA) expressed disappointment on Thursday over a Finance Ministry decision to indefinitely postpone gradually reducing the new ENFIA property tax for empty properties that do not generate any income.
