Pelicans are delaying their annual migration from Türkiye to Africa, an expert has warned, citing human interference as a key factor.

With the fall season starting in September, thousands of pelicans in Europe start flapping their wings to migrate to Africa.

Wild animals have entered the colony of Dalmatian Pelicans in Bulgaria's Srebarna Nature Reserve and have scared them. Video surveillance footage shows that an animal has eaten some of the eggs and the birds have moved.

There is an increased number of Dalmatian pelican pairs in the Nature Reserve "Srebarna" this year, with an average of 20 families returning in the first warmer weeks, reports BNT.

Predators attacked the pelicans in the Srebarna Park near Silistra, taking advantage of the still frozen surface of the lake.

Experts and guards in the Reserve first noticed the predators about a week ago.

According to Romanian authorities, bird flu was the likely cause for the death of the pelicans, Darik radio reports.

Six pelicans have been found dead at the Srebarna nature reserve in northeastern Bulgaria on Monday, BTA news agency reported.

The cause of the death wasn't immediately known.

The find takes to 27 the dead bodies of pelicans found in the nature reserve, a World Heritage Site located on a freshwater lake of 900 hectares on the border with Romania.

The bodies of 21 pelicans were found in the Srebarna nature reserve in northeastern Bulgaria on Tuesday.

The likely causes of the birds' death are disease, poisoning or overpopulation of the colony, private bTV station reports.

The reserve has a pelican colony consisting of 65 couples and during the inspection on Tuesday newly-hatched pelicans were discovered.
