A suicide bombing that struck inside a mosque at a police and government compound in northwest Pakistan reflects "security lapses," current and former officials said as the death toll from the devastating blast climbed to 100 on Tuesday.

A suicide bomber struck Monday inside a mosque within a police compound in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar, killing at least 28 people and wounding as many as 150 worshippers, most of them policemen, officials said.

The Pakistani Taliban on Wednesday claimed responsibility for an overnight suicide bombing at a campaign rally that killed a secular politician and 20 others, two weeks before the country's nationwide elections.

Pakistan observed a day of national mourning on Jan. 21 for the 21 people killed when heavily-armed gunmen stormed a university in the troubled northwest, exposing the failings in a national crackdown on extremism.

Heavy gunfire and blasts were heard from inside the Bacha Khan university as gunmen tried to storm their way into the building, while according to reports at least three people are wounded.

The attack was carried out in Charsadda, about 50 km from the city of Peshawar, where in 2014 Talibans had murdered more than 130 students at a school.

At least nine people were killed and 35 injured Jan. 19 in a suicide bomb attack on a market during morning rush hour on the outskirts of Pakistan's northwestern city of Peshawar, officials said.

The bomb exploded alongside a road jammed with traffic in the Wazir Dhand district just outside city limits.

A powerful 7.5 magnitude quake struck Afghanistan's Hindu Kush region on Oct. 26 and was felt throughout much of South Asia, killing at least 17 people in neighbouring Pakistan, with fears the death toll could rise substantially.

Taliban gunmen stormed a Pakistani Air Force base early on Sept.18, killing at least 17 people, a military spokesman said, the deadliest attack on a military installation this year.

Senior provincial minister Inayatullah told AFP at least 104 bodies had been taken to two hospitals in Peshawar, the northwestern city where the attack took place.
