Imagine this: It’s just past midnight, and your mother’s number appears on your phone screen. You answer, and on the other end, you hear her voice—it’s unmistakably her, and the caller ID confirms it’s her number—crying out, “Let me go!” “Help!” and other phrases in panic.

Nine people were arrested in the northern town of Serres as suspected members of a criminal gang that defrauded individuals and companies through phone scams.

In a remarkable display of vigilance, police officers in Varna thwarted a phone scam by halting an entire bus to warn a potential victim. The incident, which unfolded in Devnya, underscores the dangers of phone scams and the crucial role of law enforcement in preventing financial fraud, as reported by the Ministry of the Interior.

Reports of phone scams are on the rise across Bulgaria, with recent months witnessing a notable increase in fraudulent calls, particularly targeting the elderly population, according to police analysis.

Police officers are working to identify the perpetrator of the phone scam, reports BNT. 

The Fraud Squad, the National Police and Sofia Police Department have broken up a phone fraud that has been going on for almost a month, said the press office of the Ministry of the Interior.

An 11-year-old child from the South Bulgarian city of Stara Zagora became a victim of telephone fraudsters. It gave the criminals more than BGN 53,000 and gold jewelery. The child was deceived to give the money through one of the classic schemes - the fraudsters asked for assistance to the police.

In 2017, over 4 million calls were received by the emergency telephone. Only half are real signals. Most of the calls are for help from the police and emergency help. Statistics account for a 14% reduction in malicious calls.
