Thessaloniki lawyers call strike over alleged police brutality

Lawyers in Thessaloniki will be abstaining from all court appearances today in protest at an alleged assault by a police officer against a colleague.

Lawyers in the northern port city claim that during a trial on July 29, a police officer grabbed a female lawyer by the arm and dragged her across the courtroom.

Tear gas at Paris demo against police 'brutality'

French police fired tear gas in clashes with demonstrators in Paris on March 19 as thousands marched against "police brutality" after the alleged rape of a black youth with a police baton.

The February attack on the 22-year-old man, identified only as Theo, cast a spotlight on rough policing methods in France and triggered riots in the gritty suburbs surrounding Paris.

Pepper spray fired at Greek retirees in anti-austerity rally

Greek police have fired pepper spray at retirees taking part in an anti-austerity protest against pension cuts in central Athens near the prime minister's office.

About 1,000 people, some of them with canes, took party in Monday's protest. Dozens of protesters at the front of the rally tried to break through a police cordon and chanted "Shame on you, shame on you!"

One dead, one injured in California college shooting

One man was killed and another seriously wounded in a shooting at a Sacramento, California college campus, police said late on Sept.3. 

"Campus is clear... investigation is underway," Sam Somers, police chief in the California capital city said in a tweet, adding that the lone suspect in the case remains at large.    

Shocking police shooting video made public (video)

A shocking video of Los Angeles police shooting a cyclist on the side of the road was finally made public two years after the incident occurred. Ricardo Diaz Zeferino, 34, was approached by officers who ordered him and another man to raise their hands. He complied but then lowered and raised his hands several times, leading the three officers to open fire and kill him.
