Historic icon on procession

New Democracy to campaign for UN, EU recognition of Pontian genocide.

New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis condemned the near lynching of a 29-year-old Sunday school teacher in Thessaloniki after the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the start of the Pontian genoicide even as he announced that his party has petitioned the UN to recognise, the genocide.

Boutaris says he was attacked by 'organized fascists'

Thessaloniki mayor Yannis Boutaris on Monday described those who attacked him during an event on Saturday commemorating the massacre of Pontian Greeks by Turks during World War I as "organized fascists." 

Boutaris was briefly hospitalized after being thrown to the ground, kicked and punched by about 12 people.

Rallies planned in solidarity with Thessaloniki mayor

Supporters of Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris, who was on Saturday attacked by nationalist extremists in Greece's northern port city, have organized a solidarity rally for Monday at 5 p.m. at the capital's Kotzia Square.

A similar rally will be staged in Thessaloniki on Wednesday night, at the site of the assault, next to the city's iconic White Tower.

PM Tsipras: May 19 a day of remembrance for Genocide of Greeks in Pontos
