The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is seriously concerned by the Italian Government's decision to approve by law the imposition of fines on ships rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean.

Malta announced today that it has been agreed that 64 migrants rescued in Libyan waters 10 days ago to be allocated to four EU countries, according to the BTA. 
    Malta has specified that migrants will be allocated to Germany, France, Portugal and Luxembourg.

Some 117 migrants who left Libya in a rubber dinghy two days ago are unaccounted for, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said on Jan. 19, after three people were rescued from the vessel after it sank in the Mediterranean.

Greece's coast guard says a search and rescue operation off the southwestern tip of Greece located a boat carrying 65 migrants, who have been transported on coast guard vessels to the nearest port.

Montenegro confirmed on Wednesday that it has been approached by Italy and asked to take in a number of migrants and refugees, to help end a 10-day standoff with a ship docked off the Italian coast at Catania.

The government in Podgorica said it was still mulling whether to take the mostly African-origin migrants and refugees, but has not yet taken a stance.

A boat with illegal migrants sank near Turkey, six people died. Among the victims are three babies.

On the vessel that traveled to the Greek island of Lesbos, there were a total of 16 people, all Turkish citizens. Nine of the passengers were rescued, and one person was declared missing.
