Members of several LQBTQI groups on Saturday held a protest rally in Athens' main Syntagma square against racism, prompted by the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in handcuffs on May 25 while a white Minneapolis police officer pressed a knee on his neck.

Protesters held protest banners forming the phrase "Black Lives Matter" and unfurled a long rainbow flag.

The tenor of the protests set off by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police has taken a turn from the explosive anger that has fueled the setting of fires, breaking of windows and other violence to a quiet, yet more forceful, grassroots call for more to be done to address racial injustice.

Draft legislation to be discussed during a cabinet meeting Monday is expected to put forward a series of measures to ensure that strikes on public transport and street protests do not create inordinate upheaval for city-dwellers.

The right to strike is sacrosanct. It is an accomplishment of the labor movement and one of the most important democratic means that employees possess to exert pressure for their demands to be met. For strikes, protests and all sorts of marches with demands to be effective, broad social support is needed, as it increases the political pressure on the government to respond to those demands.

According to the announcement of the taxi associations, protest rides will be organized in the next days from 13 to 15 hours, until, as they say, the competent authorities start to obey the laws.
