Drones monitoring Zakynthos

Following a spate of arson attacks that razed swaths of forestland on Zakynthos last month, local authorities, in cooperation with the Greek Police (ELAS), are using two drones to monitor the Ionian island from the air in an attempt to locate fires before they are able to do any great damage.

Arson Blamed for Zakynthos Fires

Recent wildfires on Zakynthos, which has suffered widespread damage following dozens of blazes, were the work of arsonists, according to Citizens' Protection Minister Nikos Toskas, Ekathimerini writes.

Speaking on Real FM radio Tuesday, Toskas suggested that the arsonists may have being trying to create space for "hotels where there are currently forests."

Numerous wildfires put strain on Zakynthos

Wildfires continued to rage on Zakynthos on Monday as suspicions grew regarding arson being the cause of some of an estimated 80 outbreaks of fires on the Ionian island over the last few days. "Such a high number of fires on one island in such a small period of time cannot be a coincidence," said Zakynthos Mayor Pavlos Kolokostas.

Fire burns on Zakynthos for third day

Authorities in Greece say a wildfire that broke out on the holiday island of Zakynthos on Saturday continues to burn unchecked.

The fire destroyed one home near the villages of Maries, in the eastern part of the island also known as Zante, while residents of nearby homes were on standby to evacuate, authorities said.

A large wildfire threatened homes on the holiday island of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea on Saturday, despite efforts by authorities to contain the blaze.

The fire was unfolding on four separate fronts, near the villages of Anafonitria, Volimes and Porto Vromi, as well as on Mount Skopos, just a few kilometers from the outskirts of the main town.

Greece must defend Cyprus, its sovereignty and the liberation of its territories, President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos said on Thursday, during a dinner held at the Monastery of Aghios Dionysios on the island of Zakynthos, which was also attended by the Archbishop of Cyprus.
