A fresh economic crisis would leave Greek banks exposed and see their capital slide by billions, the European Central Bank said on May 5 after publishing the results of a latest stress test.

The country's four systemic banks saw their stock prices gain about 15 percent over the week after reports emerged that they have successfully negotiated their stress tests. During the week the lenders were informed in Frankfurt about the tests' progress and the official announcement of the results is now scheduled for Saturday, May 5.

The European Central Bank will decide "on a case-by-case basis" whether to demand that more capital is set aside by banks that come up short under stress in this year's health check of the European credit sector, its top supervisor said on Thursday.

The stress tests that Greek banks are due to undergo in the coming weeks will provide an important waypoint in the country's efforts to get back on the path to normality.

Greek banks responded positively on Wednesday to the macroeconomic parameters against which they will be assessed in their upcoming stress tests.

The European Banking Authority is scheduled to release the macroeconomic scenarios for European banks' stress tests on Wednesday, although certain sources say this may be postponed until the end of the week.
