Rohingya insurgency in Western Myanmar

Bangladesh will use troops to deliver foreign aid to the border town that has been overwhelmed by Rohingya Muslim refugees from Myanmar, authorities announced.

The move follows criticism of the chaotic conditions in which relief supplies have been handed out at the huge camps around Cox's Bazar, where about 389,000 Rohingya from Myanmar's Rakhine state have arrived since Aug. 25.

The United Nations' top human rights official on Sept. 11 slammed Myanmar for conducting a "cruel military operation" against Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state, branding it "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing."

Myanmar authorities have ordered the mining of border areas with Bangladesh, government sources from Dhaka say, adding that they are hoping to prevent the return of escaped Rohingya, Reuters reports.

On Wednesday, September 6, the Bangladesh government will hand over an official protest note against the mines near the border, FOCUS News Agency adds.

The number of victims of clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in western Myanmar has reached 402 in a week, Kyodo reports, citing the authorities.

More than 18,000 Rohingya Muslims, many sick and some with bullet wounds, have fled the worst violence to grip northwest Myanmar in at least five years, while thousands more are stuck at the Bangladesh border or scrambling to reach it.

Turkey condemned operations by Myanmar security officials in Rakhine state which killed hundreds of people. 

At least four soldiers were killed in a third day of clashes in Myanmar’s troubled Rakhine state on Tuesday, the army said.
State media said the soldiers were attacked by 300 men armed with pistols, swords and knives.
Nine police officers were killed in co-ordinated attacks at the weekend along Myanmar’s border with Bangladesh.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai on June 8 urged Myanmar leaders to take "immediate action" to prevent the persecution of the country's Rohingya Muslims, most of whom are considered by the government to be illegal immigrants.

President Barack Obama has urged Myanmar to end discrimination against its ethnic Rohingya minority if it wants to succeed in its democratic transition from decades of junta rule.
