Archaeologists May Have Discovered Ancient Thracian, Roman Town Scaptopara, Precursor of Bulgaria's Blagoevgrad

Archaeologists have discovered the ruins of a large town from the time of the Roman Empire hypothesizing that it might be the Ancient Thracian and Roman settlement of Scaptopara, the predecessor of today's city of Blagoevgrad in Southwest Bulgaria, whose name is known from a stone inscription of a petition by the locals to Roman Emperor Gordian III.

Archaeologists Find Statue of Egyptian Goddess Isis, Satyr's Head at Roman Villa, Nymphaeum in Bulgaria's Kasnakovo

A 2nd century AD marble statue of the Ancient Egyptian goddess Isis, who was also worshipped in the wider Greco-Roman world, and a marble head of a satyr, a male companion of ancient wine god Dionysus, have been discovered by archaeologists at a Roman villa and nymphaeum near the town of Kasnakovo in Southern Bulgaria.

Valuable Archarological Finds Were Discovered Near Troyan

During archaeological work this summer at the ancient Roman fortress of Sostra near the Bulgarian town of Troyan, three residential buildings dating back to the lll-lV century and used by the Roman military were discovered, reported the Bulgarian National Television.

Precious silver, bronze and copper coins and a very rare find - a measure used to weight gold coins were found too.

Giant pool from ancient city comes to light

The ancient city of Aphrodisias, located in the western province of Aydın's Karacasu district, is home to a giant pool reflecting the magnificence of Roman-era cities that is set to be completely excavated by 2017. 

Listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the city has drawn attention for its well-preserved monumental structures.
