After Heavy Rains: Petrohan Pass Closed, Danger of Collapse of the Road Smolyan – Devin

The Petrohan Pass is closed due to fallen stones on the road. The traffic on the road Sofia - Montana in the section Barzia - Gintsi, at km 59 is temporarily limited due to the fallen rock mass and flooded road section. The traffic is regulated by the Traffic Police, only vehicles moving to Montana are allowed, and traffic to Sofia is diverted.

Three municipalities in Smolyan district are in a state of emergency due to cut roads due to rivers overflowing their banks. These are Rudozem, Nedelino and Borino. A partial state of emergency has also been declared for the Devin village of Trigrad.

Eleven people in Smolyan were buried under landslides and persistent rainfall is complicating the situation in the city and thevicinity. As a result of the rainfall in the mountainous region, many landslides were triggered, retaining walls fell, there are villages and neighborhoods without available access to them.

Scottish Couple Run Animal Shelter in Bulgaria's Rudozem

A Scottish couple living in Bulgaria since 2007 have set up an animal shelter for stray cats and dogs, the New York Daily News  reports.

Tony and Diane Rowles initially relocated in search for "a more peaceful life" in Rudozem, Southern Bulgaria, but now look after nearly 200 animals they have either rescued or been given by other people who heard about their work.

Thunderstorms, Possible Hails Expected Across Bulgaria

Thunderstorms and prolific rains are expected in the early evening hours of Wednesday evening across Southern Bulgaria.

Meteorologists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences have issued code orange on account of the dangerous weather for the municipalities of Pazardzhik, Plovdiv, Smolyan, Kardzhali and Haskovo.

The regions of Smolyan and Kardzhali, as well as the municipalities of Ivaylovgrad Laki, Batak, Sarnitsa, Velingrad, Haskovo and Galabovo remain in a state of emergency over the heavy rains and snowstorms in Bulgaria.

Close to 538 locations across the country had no electricity, as announced by the Interior Ministry's Press Office.

Heavy snowfall blocks roads, cuts power in southern Bulgaria

Power supply to more than 800 locations in southern Bulgaria has been disrupted as of Sunday evening due to heavy snowfall now in its third day.

Some villages and towns in the regions of Smolyan and Kardzhali as well as the southernmost areas of Pazardzhik region have remained without water supply, too, as water pumps were idled by the lack of electricity.

Emergency in Bulgaria's South as Snow Cuts Power, Sticks on Roads

Emergency has been declared due to the heavy snowfall in the municipality of Rudozem, in Smolyan region in Bulgaria's south.

The alert entered into force on Sunday, 06:30 local time. It follows days of severe weather conditions across Bulgaria, but mostly affecting its southern regions.
