S-400 missile system

Russia has agreed to transfer the technology of S-400 anti-ballistic missile systems, and it constitutes the most advantageous aspect of the deal between the two countries, Presidential Spokesperson İbrahim Kalın has said, informing that the agreement between the two states will soon be concluded. 

The first phase is the shipping of the two S-4oo missiles from Russia to Turkey. One system will be deployed in Turkey’s east against possible threats from Syria and Iran, and the other in the west against a Greek threat. The new S-400s will be manufactured in Turkey.

Turkey has reportedly signed deal to co-produce the S-400 surface to air missile system with Russia. The plan has already provoked criticism from the country's fellow NATO members and could further strain its relations with the alliance.

There is no harm in Turkey's missile defense system purchase from Russia, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said in response to U.S. top general's concerns over the issue, adding that the two countries have already signed a deal for the delivery of the S-400 missiles.

Media reports claiming that Turkey would buy Russian S-400 air defense systems were not true, U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford said at a security forum in Aspen, Colorado on July 23. 

Turkey has signed an agreement with fellow NATO members France and Italy to develop its national missile defense systems, the Turkish Defense Minister said on July 14.      

Turkey has agreed to pay Russia 2.5 billion dollars for its most advanced missile defense system S-400, an official said late Thursday.

The official, speaking to Bloomberg on condition of anonymity, said that the regional power wanted to build its own missile defense systems.

Turkey will cooperate with France and Italy on developing a national missile defense system project, Defense Minister Fikri Işık said on July 4, adding that the focus was on "development of the systems" rather than purchasing.

The country will meet its immediate demands by buying S-400 systems from Russia, he underlined. 

Moscow and Ankara have agreed on the delivery of the S-400 air defense system to Turkey, Russian presidential aide Vladimir Kozhin said on June 29.      

"The contract has been agreed upon. The issue on the loan has not been resolved yet," Kozhin was quoted as saying by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.
