On December 19, 1992, robbers drilled holes in the basement wall of what was then an Ergasias Bank branch in central Athens - even though it was reinforced with steel - opened hundreds of safes and removed valuables, cash and bonds worth billions of drachmas, or millions of euros today.

Robbers flee with one million euros from company office
The offices of a building management company in Metamorfosi, northern Attica, were robbed early Thursday, with the suspects making off with around one million euros, company employees told police.
Retired bank workers accused of robbing safes released from custody
Five former bank workers in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, accused of lifting some 2.7 million euros worth of cash, gold and jewelry from safes, were released from pretrial custody on Thursday.
The five retired bank workers denied charges of embezzlement, among others, in their depositions to an investigating magistrate, who ordered their release.

Six bank staff tied to ring that netted 2.7 mln euros from safe deposit boxes
Six bank employees are being charged as members of a criminal ring believed to have netted more than 2.7 million euros in cash and valuables from safe deposit boxes of a branch of National Bank in Thessaloniki over a period of 17 years.
Safe deposit gang suspected in robbery using sledgehammers
The so-called "safe deposit gang" apparently struck again early on Wednesday morning in the suburb of Gerakas in eastern Attica, police said.
According to reports, six men entered a building housing a marketing company at the intersection of Komotinis and Imathias streets at around 3.30 a.m. and used sledgehammers to break through a wall into an office in an adjacent building.
'Safe-deposit box gang' blamed for Avlona warehouse robbery
Police suspect that the so-called "safe-deposit box gang" was behind a burglary at a pharmaceutical company warehouse in Avlona in northern Attica early Thursday morning.
According to reports, five masked men entered the warehouse, located on the Athens-Lamia national highway, at around 3 a.m.

Police on Thursday were exploring possible links between a robbery at a cosmetics firm northeast of Athens and a string of similar break-ins in the past few months targeting safes in large businesses.
