Hundreds of Ukrainian refugees arriving daily have a message for family and friends in Europe: the fastest route to settle in the United States is booking a flight to Mexico.

Researchers from the San Diego Natural History Museum and the non-profit Terra Peninsular were scratching their heads when they found unfamiliar rodents in traps they placed around a field in Baja California. They were intending to study rodent populations in the area — but instead made a rare discovery.

Jan. 23 has been named “Kenan Pala Day,” after a 13-year-old Turkish-origin teenager, in the U.S.’s San Diego city for his project that helps homeless people in the state of California.
