Two killed in Anavyssos crash

Two people were killed in a crash Friday night in Anavyssos, East Attica.

The accident occurred around 9 p.m. on Athens-Sounion Avenue when a car driven by a 31-year-old woman collided with a motorcycle. The 28-year-old motorcyclist and his 30-year-old passenger died at the scene.

Bulgaria has become the EU member state most severely impacted by forest fires this year. According to the European Forest Fire Information System, over 38,000 hectares of land in Bulgaria have been burned so far, more than double the area affected in the previous year.

Fire tear Anavyssos threatens homes

A fire broke out in the Mavro Lithari area near the settlement of Anavyssos on Attica's southern coast, threatening homes.

An 112 emergency alert message was sent earlier, instructing people in the area to evacuate toward Glyfada. Police have halted eastbound traffic on the Athens-Sounio road.

Eleven fires from 2017 to 2023 burned 23% of Attica Region

Eleven large-scale fires in the Attica Region from 2017 to the end of July 2023 have destroyed over 55,000 hectares (550,000 stremmas), the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr said on Monday after data provided by the European Union's Copernicus mapping services and the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS).

Investigation ordered into animal shelter fire deaths

A prosecutor has ordered a preliminary investigation into the circumstances of the death of animals at a private shelter in Lagonissi, in southeastern Attica, following an extensive fire in the region.

The fire broke out at nearby Neos Kouvaras on Monday and spread to other areas of southeastern Attica, leading to the death of several cats and dogs at the shelter.
