One migrant dead, two missing, in shipwreck off southern Crete

One man has died and two more are missing after a boat carrying migrants sank off Gavdos, an island south of Crete.

Coast guard officials said the vessel went down 21 nautical miles south of the island.

A drone from the EU's border agency Frontex spotted the semi-submerged vessel and a nearby ship conducted a search and rescue operation.

96 migrants rescued off Gavdos after the boat carrying them sank

An alarm was raised in the early hours of Wednesday morning when the coastguard was informed of the sinking of a boat carrying 96 illegal immigrants off Gavdos.

Search and rescue procedures were immediately activated under the coordination of the EKSED for the sinking of the vessel 21 nautical miles off Gavdos.

Rescue operation underway for hiker in distress on Mount Olympus

A rescue operation is underway by members of the Hellenic Rescue Team (HRT) to assist a hiker in danger on Mount Olympus.

The rescue team received an emergency radio call on Sunday regarding the hiker near the Kastana area. Volunteers stationed on the mountain are on their way to the scene. The fire department in Litochoro has also been notified and is involved in the operation.

Search underway for missing German hiker on Crete

A search and rescue operation is continuing on Crete for a 60-year-old German man who was reported missing on a hike on Friday.

The man had set out on the hike with two women on Friday along the Sougia trial towards the Trypti Gorge, in the south of the island, according to state broadcaster ERT.

Along the way, the other hikers lost track of the man and later raised the alarm.

At least four die in migrant shipwreck off Samos

At least four migrants died when their boat sank on Monday off the Greek island of Samos, the Greek Coast Guard said.

At least 30 migrants were believed to be initially on board the vessel that foundered off the rocky shores of Agios Isidoros in the northwestern part of the Aegean island, according to coast guard officials.
