Terrorist Attacks in Russia's Dagestan: Gunmen Target Synagogue and Church, Killing Police

Last night, over 15 police officers were killed in a series of attacks in Dagestan, a southern Russian region, according to reports from Russian news agencies. The attacks, which also caused civilian casualties, occurred simultaneously in two cities on June 23. Gunmen targeted a synagogue, an Orthodox church, and a police post.

More than 19 police officers and several civilians, including an Orthodox priest, were killed by armed militants in Russia's southern republic of Dagestan on Sunday, its governor Sergei Melikov said in a video statement early Monday.

The gunmen opened fire on two Orthodox churches, a synagogue and a police post in two cities, according to the authorities.

Russia says attack foiled in south of country

Russian officials said Friday they had arrested three people plotting an attack in the country's south, a week after the assault on a Moscow concert hall killed at least 144 people.

The FSB security agency said it had "put an end to the terrorist activities of three nationals from a Central Asian country", Russian news agencies reported.

One person died and two were injured in the fire, according to the emergency services.
According to the governor of the Rostov region Vasiliy Golubev, the cause of the fire was a short circuit in the electrical installations.

According to the Russian media, it is Ukrainian citizen Bogdan Tsyganenko (42), who is suspected of being responsible, together with Natalya Vovk, for the bomb attack in which Darya Dugina was killed.
Tsyganenko, 44, arrived in Russia via Estonia on July 30 and left the country the day before the killing, the FSB said.
