Ferry grounds near Igoumenitsa with 550 passengers aboard

A ferry carrying 550 passengers and 16 crew members ran aground Monday, four nautical miles northwest of the port of Igoumenitsa, in northwestern Greece, authorities said.

Officials said the Corfu-Igoumenitsa ferry Agia Theodora ran aground in shallow waters, posing no threat to passenger safety.

Early morning quake rattles Kefalonia

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck the Ionian island of Kefalonia (also spelled Cephalonia) in the early hours of Friday. There were no reports of injuries or damage.

According to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the epicenter of the quake was 6 kilometers west-southwest of Fiskardo, at a depth of 16.1 kilometers.

Romanian man, 31, dies in workplace accident on Corfu

A 31-year-old man has died in a workplace accident on the island of Corfu.

According to the public broadcaster ERT, the victim, a Romanian national, fell from a lift on the fifth floor of a hotel during renovation work on Wednesday morning.

He was taken to the hospital, where doctors confirmed his death. 

Bodies of Ukrainian tourists recovered from sea off Corfu

Rescuers have retrieved the bodies of a woman and her daughter from the sea off northern Corfu.

The 52-year-old mother and the 32 year-old daughter were holidaymakers from Ukraine, according to state broadcaster ERT.

Coast guard and firefighters participated in the operation in the sea off Sidari.
