In revealing the citizenship and residence status of a candidate for the Montenegrin presidency, Serbia stands accused of interfering in favour of its preferred, pro-Serb challenger.

Media reported on Tuesday that the mayor of the Borovo municipality in eastern Croatia, Zoran Bacanovic, is under police investigation over his recent Facebook post about Operation Storm.

The new Montenegrin government has promised to bring change for thousands of mostly Serb residents who want to become citizens but cannot because the country's strict legislation means they would have to give up their original citizenship.

The President of Serbia, as he states, "by appropriating the Montenegrin history" wants to bridge the missing part of the history of Serbia.

When asked about the relationship between him and Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic, he said it was in the interest of both sides that the work be done for the benefit of all.

Djukanovic is set to end 27 years as Montenegro's top politician after his Democratic Party of Socialists nominated his long-standing protégé, Dusko Markovic, as his potential successor on Tuesday evening, according to a statement from the party leadership. 

Three main opposition groups in Montenegro say they will join forces to fight in the general election scheduled for October 16.

The "democratic coalition" unites three parties and groups considered civic and moderate in their orientation - the Civic Movement URA, DEMOS and the Socialist People's Party, SNP.

The Serb Progressive Party (SNS) announced on Tuesday it is requesting an election recount, and access to all electoral materials.

In Sunday's elections, Serbian citizens showed strong support for their country's strategic objective to join the EU.

The presidency of the Serb People's Party (SNP) has decided to join the Serb Progressive Party (SNS) on their list for early parliamentary elections.
