The Athens-Epidaurus Festival (aefestival.gr) is inaugurating its program at the cool Pireos 260 venue with a feast of shows for the week starting on June 7. On Stage D, avant-garde Russian theater and film director Kirill Serebrennikov is making his Greek debut with a performance expressing his opposition to Moscow and its invasion of Ukraine.

Russia's Bolshoi Theater has removed a ballet dedicated to dancer Rudolf Nureyev from its repertoire, citing a new Russian law that expands restrictions on activities seen as promoting LGBT rights, its director said Wednesday.

Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre has decided to cancel a ballet production by the Kremlin-critical director Kirill Serebrennikov and replace it with a ballet by Slovenian-based choreographer Edward Clug. Clug says he is powerless because the Bolshoi holds exclusive rights to his ballet until 2026.

Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov was permitted to leave the country and has travelled to Berlin. 

The 52-year-old is known for his daring films and plays that have earned him the ire of conservatives.

Serbia's most prestigious theatre festival, BITEF, has dismissed the stated reasons for Kirill Serebrennikov's detention in Russia as unacceptable and has expressed the hope that other, political reasons, are not hidden behind the charges.

The Athens Concert Hall is showing a live screening of the Bolshoi Ballet in "A Hero of Our Time," by choreographer Yuri Possokhov and theatre director Kirill Serebrennikov, that takes a fresh approach to the classic 19th century novel by Mikhail Lermontov. The music is by Ilya Demutsky. The screening starts at 6 p.m. and admission costs 15 euros.

BELGRADE - The 45th International Film Festival FEST closed at Belgrade's Sava centar late Sunday with an award ceremony and screenings of Martin Scorsese's Silence and Luka Bursac's Afterparty.
