German authorities are set to erect a monument to honor the first generation of Turkish workers, acknowledging their significant contribution to economic development in Germany.

Fourteen Turkish-origin German citizens were elected to Germany's Bundestag in the Sept. 24 general elections.

According to the temporary initial results, Aydan Özoğuz, Metin Hakverdi, Mahmut Özdemir, Cansel Kızıltepe, Gülistan Yüksel and Elvan Korkmaz were elected on the ranks of the Social Democrats (SPD).

The number of Turks seeking asylum in Germany is up sharply this year and has been rising steadily since last year's failed coup attempt, German government data showed on Sept. 18.
