Egypt restricts women traveling to Turkey

Egypt has imposed restrictions on female citizens traveling to Turkey, police said on May 17, months after introducing similar measures for men to stop them joining the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) jihadist group.

Women aged 18 to 40 are now required to obtain security clearance before going to Turkey, a senior police officer told AFP, without specifying why.

Egypt's main jihadist group pledges allegiance to ISIL

Egypt's deadliest militant group, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, pledged its allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), in a recording posted on its Twitter account on Nov. 10.

"We announce our pledge of allegiance to the caliph Ibrahim Ibn Awad... to listen and obey," the audio recording said, referring to ISIL leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
