As the civil service strives to return to normal functioning, the country's Interior Ministry has issued guidelines that will come into force today for safeguarding workers and members of the public who have business with the public sector.

The government is preparing to honor a pledge to offer permanent status to civil servants in key posts of the public sector, Kathimerini understands, with legislation boosting their rights expected to head to Parliament soon.

Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who is overseeing a troika-imposed overhaul of the civil service, on Thursday issued a circular to all ministries and state bodies calling for an intensification of checks aimed at weeding out public sector employees who were hired on the basis of forged degree certificates or other fake qualifications.
