The new director of Moldova's SIS has vowed to reform the secret service and protect Moldova's European path. He faces challenges in the shape of a KGB legacy and war in neighbouring Ukraine.

The General Prosecutor of Moldova, Alexandr Stoianoglu, on Wednesday said charges against the former head of the intelligence service, SIS, Vasile Botnari, had been sent to court for the involuntary deportation in 2018 of seven Turkish teachers to Turkey, where they were jailed for alleged links to exiled cleric Fethullah Gulen.

New rules to strengthen the Schengen Information System (SIS) - proposed by the Commission in December 2016 and adopted earlier this year - are entering into force today.

The Moldovan intelligence service, SIS, on Wednesday said it had broken up a paramilitary group that had links to the pro-Russian separatist cause in eastern Ukraine.

The SIS said the group had been under counter-terrorist surveillance for over a year, and the SIS had in the meantime established connections between its members and mercenary entities in eastern Ukraine.

Human rights organisations in Moldova, the Center for Legal Resources of Moldova and Promo-LEX human rights association, on Thursday issued a joint declaration, protesting over the rights violations of seven detained Turkish nationals who it is suspected will be deported to Turkey.

Turkish pro-government media on Thursday said the Turkish intelligence service, the MIT, had participated in the detaining of six Turkish nationals that morning in Moldova and had taken them into an unknown direction.
