Award-winning Somali poet Mohamed Ibrahim Warsame, better-known by his pen name Hadraawi, died on Aug. 18 aged 79, prompting a flood of tributes to the "Shakespeare of Somalia."

Hadraawi died in a hospital in Hargeisa, the capital of the breakaway region of Somaliland, after battling ill health for the past seven years.

Turkey welcomed a decision by the Somali parliament on May 1 that would see elections held in the Horn of Africa nation as soon as possible.

"We welcome the decision of the Lower House of the Somali Parliament today [1 May], which endorses holding the elections on the basis of the 17 September agreement as soon as possible," said the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Taking the opportunity of the rising number of their fellow nationals living in the Turkish capital, Somali entrepreneurs both earn and contribute to the country's economy with various shops they opened in the city.

Turkey's National Intelligence Organization (MİT) helped rescue a kidnapped Italian aid worker in Somalia, state-run Anadolu Agency said on May 10.

Silvia Constanza Romano, who was working for an Italian charity called African Milele, was abducted in Kenya's southeastern coastal town of Chakama in Kenya in November 2018. No group claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.   

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that Somalia had invited Turkey to explore for oil in its seas, after Ankara signed a maritime agreement with Libya last year, broadcaster NTV reported.

President Donald Trump has chided his supporters who chanted "send her back" when he questioned the loyalty of a Somali-born congresswoman, joining widespread criticism of the campaign crowd's cry after Republicans warned about political blowback from the angry scene.

Somalis who graduated from Turkish universities on Aug. 20 condemned the U.S. sanctions on Turkey and urged their compatriots to help the Turkish nation go through their difficult times.

A Turkish military training camp is set to open in the Somali capital Mogadishu next month, the Somali defense minister said on Aug. 3.      

Abdirashid Abdullahi Mohamed said in a statement that the camp which had been under construction for the last two years will open this September.
