Travelers arriving in Cuba can now bring in food, medicine and other essentials without paying customs, the government said on July 14 in a concession to angry and unprecedented street protests.

Prime Minister Manuel Marrero said there would be no limit placed on these goods coming in and the change will be in effect until the end of the year.

Cuban authorities confirmed on July 13 that one person has died during demonstrations that have shaken the island in recent days by protesting over food shortages, high prices and other grievances against the government.

The Statue of Liberty will reopen on Monday even if the U.S. government shutdown extends into the work week, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Sunday, vowing to use state funds to keep the landmark monument in operation, Reuters reported.

Jennifer Lopez has donated USD 1 million after the Puerto Rico disaster during a fundraising campaign in the state of New York to support the destroyed the island by the cyclone "Maria" five days ago, AFP reported.

Hurricane Maria, the devastating storm pushing north-west through the Caribbean, has landed in Puerto Rico, reported BBC.

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said it arrived in Yabucoa in the east of the US territory, producing winds of 150 mph (250 km/h).

The hurricane is now around 24km (15 miles) southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico's capital.
