This summer's first fire risk warning has been issued for Tuesday. The Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr) revealed the risk factor is significant (category 4).

In particular, the warning concerns the regions of Viotia, Fthiotida and Fokida in central Greece, and Attica and Korinthia in the south.

There is a very high risk of fire (risk category 4) for the border region of Evros and the island of Samothraki on Saturday, according to the Fire Risk Forecast Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection on Friday.

The map showed there is also high risk of fire (risk category 3) for several other Greek regions.

A 25-year-old man lost his life on Sunday night in the town of Frangokastello, located on the southern coast of the island of Crete, when he was struck by a high-voltage cable after firing shots into the air during a celebration.

The Greek fire service was called to respond to 24 blazes from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, as protracted high temperatures and limited if any rainfall in many parts of the country have contributed to tinder-dry conditions.

Repair crews worked into the night on Friday to repair the damage from a blast at a Public Power Corporation plant in Iraklio on Crete, which had left many parts of the island region without electricity for several hours, including its industrial zone and the city center.

Police in Florina, northern Greece, Tuesday detained a 58-year-old man on charges of causing a fire through neglect. According to local reports, the man had been using an agricultural machine in the area of Seltsa, in the municipality of Prespes, when a spark from the machine triggered the blaze.
