Former president of Cyprus Dimitris Christofias dead at 72

The former president of the Republic of Cyprus Dimitris Christofias, died today at age 72 after a long hospitalisation in the ICU of the General Hospital of Nicosia. Christofias had been in critical condition since May 20.

In 2008 he was elected president of the Republic of Cyprus, a position he held until 2013, when Nicos Anastasiades defeated AKEL candidate Stavros Malas.

Incumbent Nicos Anastasiades comfortably won a second five-year term in Sunday's runoff of the Cyprus's presidential election.

The conservative statesman received 56 percent, while left-wing challenger Stavros Malas secured 44 percent of the vote. Anastasiades collected 215,281 votes against Malas's 169,243.

Anastasiades, Malas to contest Cyprus presidential election run-off

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, supported by right-wing party Democratic Rally, and communist AKEL-backed Stavros Malas will contest the run-off of the presidential election on the island, after the first round on Sunday showed Malas performing better than expected.
