Tragedy on "Struma" Highway: Passenger Bus Caught Fire, Leaving at least 46 Dead Including Children

Relatives of the passengers from the burned bus of the Struma Highway are looking for information about their relatives, but so far without success. Some of them went in front of the office of Besa Trans, which organized the trip to Istanbul.

Turkey on Feb. 24 marked the anniversary of 1942 Struma disaster, which killed hundreds of people when a vessel carrying Jewish refugees was torpedoed by a Soviet submarine in the Black Sea.

In a statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said commemoration ceremonies have been annually held in Istanbul's Sarayburnu district on Feb. 24 since 2015.

Turkey on Feb. 21 commemorated a World War II attack in the Black Sea where 768 people died when a vessel carrying Jewish refugees was torpedoed.

An official ceremony was held on Feb. 24 to commemorate the victims of the 1942 Struma incident, a World War II tragedy that resulted in the death of over 750 Romanian Jews after their ship was sunk by a Soviet submarine after it had been forced to remain docked for two months in Istanbul.

For a second time, Turkey will commemorate victims of the Struma tragedy, in which 767 Jews died in the Black Sea while trying to escape the Holocaust, with the Foreign Ministry underlining the need to draw lessons from the tragic incident.
