Former President Demirel commemorated
Turkey on June 16 remembered its ninth president, Süleyman Demirel, who passed away five years ago.
Demirel was ousted twice in military coups and survived an assassination attempt before dying of heart failure at the age of 91.
He was one of Turkey's most prominent center-right political figures, serving as prime minister seven times and as president from 1993 to 2000.

It was Republic Day on Thursday, Oct. 29. I remembered this great quote of ?smet ?nönü, the second president of Turkey, that has been carved in my memory. "My biggest victory is my fiasco in these elections?"
Turkey had started its transition to multi-party life, to the march of real democracy, with these honest elections held in 1950.

Time up for government, eyes on Erdo?an
A 45-day deadline to form a coalition government ended on Aug. 23 without a result, with President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an expected to call a snap election and assign Prime Minister Ahmet Davuto?lu to form an interim government.
On Aug. 21, the president said Turkey would hold new parliamentary elections, probably on Nov. 1.

Veteran Turkish journalist dies aged 87
Cüneyt Arcayürek, a veteran Turkish journalist, died on June 23 due to multiple organ failure. He was 87.
A lead columnist for daily Cumhuriyet, Arcayürek had been under treatment in a private hospital in Ankara since May 13. He will be laid to rest in the Gölba?? district of Ankara on June 25, without a funeral ceremony according to his bequest.
