Swerve

Road safety - a Greek oxymoron

I love Greeks, I have been married to one for 25 years, but I still don't understand them.

When we moved from Australia to the Peloponnese a few years ago, I arrived with a long-held belief that Greeks cherish their family above everything else.

But why do they put their children's lives at risk every day?

Two injured as car crashes into supermarket in Halkidiki

A 72-year-old motorist lost control of her vehicle on Friday and crashed into the glass facade of a supermarket in the town of Halkidiki, northern Greece, hitting two women, aged 59 and 85, police said.

The elder victim was transferred to a local hospital for treatment for minor injuries, according to police.

Playing with lives on our roads

A few nights ago, I was about to step off the sidewalk to cross the road outside my home when a car hurtled past me. I was startled - not because I was more distracted than usual but because the vehicle was speeding illegally up a one-way street. I caught a glimpse of young people inside. They may have been laughing. I don't know if they even saw me. I felt despair and anger.
