The Austrian government has announced that it is offering Syrian refugees a “return bonus” of 1,000 euros to return home after the fall of the Assad regime.

It was a networking lunch at a modern taverna in the downtown Athens district of Kolonos, bringing together a building contractor, two buyers, an architect, a journalist and an intermediary, from Lebanon, Syria and Sweden, while also including two Greeks.

Irregular border crossings into the European Union reached an eight-year high in 2023, the EU's border and coast guard agency has said.

According to preliminary calculations by Frontex, approximately 380,000 people irregularly entered into the EU last year, the highest level since 2016.

The massive migration movements from Syria to Türkiye, which occurred at a brisk pace in 2014, have shown a discernible decrease since 2019, according to a report by a German civil society organization.

In the wake of increased measures against illegal migrants in Istanbul, the Interior Ministry's provincial migration administration has issued an ultimatum to Syrians under temporary protection to leave Istanbul by Sept. 24 if registered in other provinces.

A total of 7,032 Syrians have repatriated to their homeland from Türkiye in August, Deputy Interior Minister İsmail Çataklı has announced.

"The total number of those repatriating to Syria was some 514,000 in July," said Çataklı, who is also the ministry's spokesperson, while briefing the media about the Syrians' return.

Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu has stressed that recent studies show around 70 percent of refugees, including Syrians, are willing to return home if security conditions are well provided.

A total of 54 Syrians, who fled from their worn-torn country and settled in Türkiye's major metropolitan city of Istanbul's Esenyurt district, have returned to safe areas in their homeland, the district's mayor has announced.

A total of 33,465 irregular migrants and 612 human smugglers have been detained, Deputy Interior Minister İsmail Çataklı has said.

Speaking at a monthly press conference in the capital Ankara on July 4, Çataklı added: "4,659 of them were caught on the sea."

Çataklı also presented the data on the Syrians inside the country.
