Tax Freedom Day

Taxation is strangling the average Greek family. Taxes and insurance contributions reach 31.7% of the salary of an employee with two children in Greece, compared to 24.4% on average in OECD countries.

Bulgaria's Tax Freedom Day in 2021 falls on May 20, the latest date in 10 years, said the Institute for Market Economics (IME). Theoretically, the average Bulgarians have worked for nearly 140 days to pay off their tax bill and start earning for themselves.

Greeks will work an average of 203 days this year to pay taxes to the state and social insurance contributions, according to research conducted by the Dragoumis Center for Liberal Studies (KEFIM) to raise awareness about tax freedom day - the first day of the year in which a country has theoretically earned enough income to pay its taxes.

Greece levies the highest taxes on families with two children among the 34 member-states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Taxes on wages rose by 1% for the average worker in OECD countries between 2010 and 2014, even though the majority of governments did not increase statutory income tax rates, according to the new OECD report on tax burdens.

This year the Tax Freedom Day in Bulgaria comes on April 30, according to an analysis of the Institute for Market Economy (IME). 

This is the day, when the planned revenues of the state budget would be completed, if the state took everything the people earned.
