Bulgarian Education Minister Todor Tanev announced on Friday that the salaries of teachers were likely to increase in the autumn.

Tanev reminded that the increase in teachers' salaries always happened in the autumn and expressed hope that this year would not make a difference, he said in an interview for private NOVA TV.

Bulgarians deem most successful the government policies connected to infrastructure (38%), culture (29%) and foreign policy (25%).

Meanwhile, the most unsuccessful areas have been the income policy (9%), followed by economics, social activities and education (each with 17% stated disapproval).

Last year's Global Competitiveness Report of the World Economic Forum placed Bulgaria 54th. Compared to countries roughly the same size (in terms of population) as Israel for instance, this is not quite an optimistic result, given that Israel came 27th in the ranking.

Minister Todor Tanev has pledged a new Education Act instead of patchy amendments and insertions to the existing one.

In a Sunday interview for the Bulgarian National Television, he claimed that the main problem of universities was the creation of unemployment.

Todor Tanev was born in Sofia in 1957.

He has a degree in sociology from the Sofia University. He is one of the founders and dean of the Political Science department in the Sofia University (1993-2000). Currently he heads the Public Administration department.

Tanev also teaches in New Bulgarian University, Sofia, and the American University in Bulgaria, Blagoevgrad.
