Jail Sentences Increased in Croatian Wartime Detention Camp Trial
Croatia's High Criminal Court on Monday increased the sentence handed down to Lora military prison commander Tomislav Duic from eight-and-a-half to ten years in prison for war crimes against civilian detainees at the Lora military prison.
The court also increased the sentence handed down to guard Emilio Bungur from four-and-a-half to eight years in prison.

In Poland, there are two types of premises for asylum seekers and people who have entered the country illegally: open centres such as refugee hostels; and detention camps like the one Rosa is stuck in, which look like high-security prisons complete with bars on the windows and barbed-wire fences topped with surveillance equipment.
Parliament ratifies 4th judicial reform package, animal rights bill
Turkey's parliament approved a long-awaited bill early on July 9 on animal rights, while lawmakers on July 8 ratified the country's fourth judicial reform package.
According to the bill, the sale of cats and dogs by pet shops will be banned, as such shops are "not suitable for animal health and ethology."

Martinovic was beaten by members of Montenegro's Special Anti-Terrorist Unit, SAJ, during an opposition protest but was not arrested or accused of any crime during the demonstration in the capital, Podgorica.
Stefanovic: 15 people detained after the incident in front of the National Assembly
"I assess today's physical attack of Bosko Obradovic and the actions of the supporters of the Alliance for Serbia on MPs and other people who tried to enter the National Assembly as pure fascism," Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic stated.
Time to deal with prisons
This government is evidently capable of showing determination and consistency in the face of crises. Beyond the pandemic and Turkey's belligerence, though, it also has to deal with the consequences of decades of mismanagement in many fields.

Kosovo War Rape Survivors Still Waiting for First Convictions
He used to be a police reservist in Vushtrri/Vucitrn, and was also a prison guard during the war, when he took part in the illegal detention of a large number of ethnic Albanian civilians at the nearby Smrekovnica detention centre from May to early June 1999.
Moldova Not Investigating Torture Allegations, US Report Says
A US State Department report on human rights in Moldova in 2019 said the country was failing to investigate most allegations of mistreatment and torture.
The report issued on Wednesday said prosecutors only opened cases for about 10 per cent of reported allegations of torture and mistreatment in the first half of 2019.
